KFOG Studio Session: Alice Merton

KFOG Studio Sessions are presented by Marin General Hospital, proudly delivering exceptional care in a healing environment.

Pair catchy indie pop sounds with a fun and talented individual and you’ve got Alice Merton.

Growing up in places like Germany, Canada, London, and Berlin, Merton got the chance to discover and write music all over the world. She attended a school for music in Germany where she got her bachelor’s degree in composition and song writing. It was also there she met her band mates.

Merton got lots of attention after releasing her single “No Roots” in 2016. “I’ve got no roots, but my home was never on the ground,” she sings of her constant traveling. She released her full LP, Mint, earlier this year and will be at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley August 15th with Young The Giant.

Speaking with No Name about forming her band and envisioning her career, Merton explained that she at first “wanted to write for other artists.”  She then stated she reached a point where she wanted to start writing music for herself saying, “I didn’t need people to see my face but I wanted people to hear the voice or the music or just the lyrics, the messages I was putting in the songs.”

Merton also has her own record label, Paper Plane Records, which she told No Name started with her manager printing out a simple contract and saying, “Well… let’s just both sign it and start the label.”

Looking forward to all of Alice Merton’s future endeavors!
