Women’s History Month is drawing to a close, and what a historical month and year it’s been! Finally, almost suddenly, women are being taken seriously when they rise in witness and in protest against entrenched injustices that have persisted for millennia.
As a nation, and in spite of (or maybe because of), our chauvinistic leadership, Americans are striving for equal representation of female voices, female wisdom, and female points of view, in politics, technology, the arts, law, education, home life, and the workplace.
We clearly have a long way to go. But at least now civic leaders, companies, and citizens are acknowledging the disparity and trying to change the entrenched culture. This has led to an invigorating feeling of hope and accomplishment.
We’ll build on that excitement with an (almost) all-female show this Sunday. I only wish I had 5 MORE hours for the show; it was excruciating to narrow down the thousands of unique and unusual songs by women in the Acoustic Sunrise library. Next year I’ll do multiple women’s shows in March!
Oh, and that “almost”? Well, I have tickets for you to see one of my fave newgrass bands, Trampled by Turtles, June 22 at the Fox in Oakland. So I’ll play a song by those dudes, as well as by Jackson Browne, as I try to comp you into his City National Civic show in San Jose in July.
