Inside Outside Lands: Saturday’s Best Shows

With over 100 different bands performing over the three-day festival, it can be difficult to pick which shows to go see. Because really, who has the time to listen to all that music and pick the best shows of the weekend?

We do.

Our DJs took the time to comb through the Outside Lands schedule and pick out the best shows on all three days so you don’t have to. Check em out:

Rockwell’s pick:

  • Jeff Goldblum & the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra
  • The Barbary, 2:15-3:00 and 3:30-4:15 pm

Going way off-script here – but, hear me out. This is technically the comedy tent, and, yes, Jeff is a great actor, and a very funny dude, but he’s also a seriously-talented jazz pianist and a semi-serious entertainer – and his “orchestra” (actually a seriously-tight small combo) puts on a great show.

Their regular weekly gigs in LA at a place called “Rockwell” (no relation) are a hot ticket. There’s classic jazz. There’s Q&A. There’s trivia. And come Saturday afternoon, when you need a break, and you just want to sit down and have a good time – head inside the tent for jazz and conversation.

Arthur’s pick:

  • Thundercat
  • Twin Peaks, 3:45-4:35 pm

Thundercat is my dude! The L.A. based bassist, and new-age yacht rock superstar first popped up on my radar laying down ultra funky slap bass notes on Flying Lotus’ 2010 album Cosmograma. Thundercat has had an interesting musical journey to say the least. He replaced Robert Trujillo in Suicidal Tendancies when Robert moved on to join Metallica. He then became one of the most sought after bassists, playing with everyone from Herbie Hancock to Eyrkah Badu to Kendrick Lamar (a collaboration which netted him a Grammy).

Thundercat recently performed with Beck at the Greek in Berkeley, which I unfortunately missed, but I can’t wait to finally see his eccentric live show at Outside Lands! For a glimpse of what’s in store for you, check out his performance on Fallon where he performs alongside yacht rock legends Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins wearing thigh-high shorts and sandals with socks.

Despite his fashion faux pas he is an absolute must see. Catch him on Saturday on the Twin Peaks stage at 3:45.

Rosalie’s pick:

  • Dawes
  • Sutro, 3:50-4:40 pm

Saturday, Dawes plays takes over Lindley Meadow. These guys did our Concert for Kids in 2013. I love, love, love, their songwriting – it’s wicked and smart; detailed imagery coupled with social commentary – they remind a lot of mid-period Eagles; sort of Hotel California.

They should be bigger than they are. They’re pretty electric, so I cheat to play them on Acoustic Sunrise. Do not miss Dawes at 3:50 Saturday.

No Name’s pick:

  • Cage The Elephant
  • Land’s End, 6:00-7:10 pm

I was first introduced to Cage The Elephant like most people were by hearing their debut single ain’t no rest for the wicked. I hated it. My first impression was that they were some type of kid rock revival band and who needed that in 2008.

Upon seeing the band live for the first time, I was forced to eat my initial first impression. They played with an unlimited amount of energy. The on stage dynamics between the Schultz brothers was mesmerizing. Matt some how has the ability to sprint across the stage, rip off his shirt and stage dive all at the same time without missing a lyric. Brad plays his guitar like he is trying to strum the strings right off it.

Four records and numerous infectious songs later, Cage The Elephant remain not only one of favorite bands but one of my favorite bands to see live.

Alicia’s pick:

  • Metallica
  • Land’s End, 7:55-9:55 pm

Seeing Metallica live is like seeing Elvis perform; I would imagine anyway!  They are electrifying.  I have never seen a live band that sounds better in person than they do on their albums; besides Metallica.  So it’s literally an experience you can’t get anywhere else.  They absolutely kill it the ENTIRE time.  There’s been no slowing for the boys, whom are all in their 50s now.  That in itself is hard to even fathom.

Make it a point to get to the Lands End stage for Metallica.  They’re performing from 7:55 pm to 9:55 pm on Saturday night.   Also, they’re opener is none other than Cage the Elephant.  Again, I would head out early and cope a swat for Cage at 6 pm and just stay for Metallica.  It’s soooooo the move!
