The Summer Olympics are coming back to California in 2028

After weeks of negotiation with the International Olympic Committee and a tumultuous bidding war between two rival host cities, Los Angeles will host the 2028 Summer Olympics. This will make L.A. the third city, behind London and Athens, to have hosted 3 Olympic Games (LA previously hosted in 1984 & 1932).

It has been over 20 years since any U.S. city hosted the Summer Games, the last being Atlanta in 1996, and they are a prime example of the problems a host city faces following the Olympics.

Olympic experts claim L.A. will be different because its plan relies on existing venues such as Staples Center, Pauley Pavilion, and the Coliseum. It will avoid spending billions to construct new stadiums and arenas, an issue most recently brought to light at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Another issue: L.A. traffic. Bring millions of people to an already gridlocked city? Host events every day? Hold an opening and closing ceremony?

Thankfully, L.A. has 11 years to figure it out.

In the meantime, we’re getting ready and excited for the 2018 Winter Olympics held in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
