Bike to Work Week

Now that I'm no longer able to cycle to work I feel like a bit of a hypocrite extolling the virtues of Bike to Work Week. That said, I was never happier than when I was able to peddle the few short miles to KFOG and greatly miss the invigorating start to my mornings.

With gas prices at near $4 a gallon and only likely to climb steeper, bicycling to work is likely to become a lot more attractive to people. Even if your commute is too far to tackle by bike alone, most transit agencies allow bikes on their buses and trains and also provide bike parking at a lot of their stations.

Of course safety is always a concern to cyclists but I think common courtesy by both bicyclists and motorists can go along way in preventing accidents and actually think that mutual respect is more the norm than the exception.
I still cycle about 200 miles a week and rarely encounter difficulties with car drivers.
Here's an interesting article by Matt Smith in the SF Weekly on the subject of cars and bikes and safety on the road.

All the Bay Area bike coalitions have activities planned this week and particularly for Bike to Work Day on Thursday. Here's some useful links:

Marin Bicycle Coalition
Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition
East Bay Bicycle Coalition

Good luck and be safe!
