KFOG's Local Scene 2 CD
18 Bay Area Bands, including: Hyim, Rich Price, ALO, Heather Combs, Rob Hotchkiss, you said saturday, The Rowan Brothers, Eoin Harrington, Luce, Thriving Ivory, Tea Leaf Green, Samantha Stollenwerck, Dub FX, Tommy Castro, Viv, Sensory Lullaby, Zachary Ross, and Chuck Prophet.
Through the years, I've been lucky to spend a few spirited mornings visiting with Dave Morey and the KFOG Morning Show. We've talked about a lot of important issues - and a few not so important ones - but one I wish we had more time to talk about was our vital local music scene. I believe that San Francisco's music scene is a tremendous part of the artistic energy that makes our city a uniquely vibrant and progressive cultural mecca. KFOG's Local Scene 2 brings another 18 Bay Area artists to your attention. The music covers a lot of ground and a lot of grooves. I'm sure you will enjoy every second. Thank you for supporting our city's local musicians and KFOG's Local Scene CD. It is an important part of the ongoing history of our San Francisco Sound. Mayor Gavin Newsom
Hyim, a San Francisco native, has been dubbed "the eclectic maestro," drawing on the cultures of the Bay Area and his own Jewish upbringing. Hyim means "life" in Hebrew. Life is change, and Sunny Days come and go; Sunny Days also help us grow. Hyim furthered his eclectic palate by traveling, circumnavigating the globe and engaging in various musical styles. The Fat Foakland Orchestra name comes from urban world beat music, aka Oakland folk music.
"Huey Lewis is a friend to and fan of the band, and has sat in with them at their home base - Sweetwater in Mill Valley...Best soup and sandwich in the Bay Area is at Eduardo's, next to our rehearsal space in San Rafael....Rich can balance anything within reason up to 50 pounds on his nose."
"Girl, I Wanna Lay You Down" was written in the South Bay as part of a soundtrack to "One Size Fits All", an independent film by local film maker Matthew Powers.
"We recorded 'Crashing Down' up at The Plant in Sausalito - talk about an inspirational place to create music. It was an absolute honor for the band to get the opportunity to record in a studio that has produced some of the greatest records of all time. We probably could have gotten the recording done more quickly though if it weren't for the video game Galactica they have there. Everyday was a battle to see who could get the high score. I guess competition breeds inspiration!"
"'Stay' was written in my tiny Novato apartment during the early days of Train, when Pat (Monahan) and I performed around the Haight, and anywhere else that’d offer us free beer. In those days, I had a bunch of songs, and Pat had only a few. I wrote 'Stay' intending it as something Pat would sing. Original Train fans will remember it. And since it never made it onto a record, I decided to do it myself."
"'Seaside' was one of those rare songs that came together quickly (helps when there are only two chords and not many lyrics!). I wrote it on a beautiful San Francisco afternoon while I was waiting for Josh to come over for rehearsal. I was sitting on my front steps with my dog, Natural, when he arrived. "Josh sat down, stared singing. Natural jumped into his lap and stared up at him - not "natural" behavior at all for this dog. Josh and I rehearsed for a while and whenever we came back to 'Seaside', Natural would jump back into Josh's lap. "Ever since that day, whenever Josh is singing, Natural tries his best to get into Josh's lap, ready to be serenaded. With any luck, Josh's voice will have the same (enchanting? hypnotizing? magical?) effect on our human audience."
"Over 30 years ago, David Grisman produced our first record on Columbia Records - The Rowan Brothers. Now, we've come full circle with David, as he plays mandolin on our new album, Circle of Friends. Also, our good friend Bob Vickers - aka Bud E Love - a musician / entertainer who we met in the early '70s in Stinson Beach, and like us comes from Massachusetts, just recently introduced us to his good friend Steve Miller, who also lived in Marin County when he recorded his biggest hits. We had a chance to jam with Steve, and just recently he invited us to open up for him at Konocti Harbor on July 4th weekend and sing "Rockin' Me" with him on stage. So Circle of Friends for us not only represents a reunion of old friends, but also of new ones, too."
After living in the Bay Area for just two years, Eoin is sought after for his dynamic singing style, as well as his high-energy stage presence. In his effort to keep his work exciting, he collaborates with other artists from genres ranging from Rock to Soul to Pop. No matter what the flavor, Eoin's passion and dedication are evident in his song writing. Whether melancholy, romantic, haunting or humorous, Harrington is capable of giving himself to his music.
Upon completion of his first album, singer/songwriter Tom Luce met with the Program Director of KFOG. Tom said, "I would feel successful in my career if, one day, I was driving across the Golden Gate Bridge and I heard one of my songs on the radio..." He got his wish, and then some.
Thriving Ivory's "Overrated" was recorded a few years ago in Scott and Clayton's apartment in the small town of Isla Vista located in Santa Barbara, CA. Recorded 5 ft from sleeping quarters, it was just another college night and the air smelled of beer, cigarettes and the uncertain destiny of our youth. Today, Thriving Ivory swings the mic into Bay Area crowds and let's them sing a line or two from what has become an official fan favorite! "Overrated" has finally found its home right here in the beautiful and enthusiastic Bay Area!
San Francisco's Tea Leaf Green is poised to take the music scene by storm. Having amazed growing audiences in the Bay Area throughout the past few years, they have become one of the fastest evolving musical acts on the West Coast. TLG's powerful rock and roll style allows the band to feature their diverse songwriting sensibilities and astounding amounts of raw talent. While TLG's roots are firmly planted in rock history, you are certain to be wowed by the sheer power of instrumental exploration, sensitive lyrical melodies and diverse range through the evening's performance.
Samantha Stollenwerck is introducing herself and her sound in 2005 with her debut album Square One. A California native, she has coined the phrase “Cali Soul,” defining her sound as a unique blend of soulful pop rock. Having spent summers on the East Coast and being exposed to rock bands like the Black Crowes, Samantha’s musical mentoring hasn’t been the same since. “Something in the voice of Chris Robinson affected me and I changed for good. I just can’t believe that I found something kinda like that in me, and probably will never understand.”
Dub FX sprang from the ashes of popular Bay Area reggae bands, Inka Inka and Dub Nation, both of whom made quite a splash throughout the Bay Area and West Coast in the '90s. The latest incarnation, Dub FX continues to carry the torch of local reggae music on into the future while adopting fresh, new style that blends multiple genres into a powerful, high-energy sound.
"Everywhere we go, whether in this country or some other country, someone remembers seeing us in North Beach, when we were just starting out. We just played a festival in Finland, and there was a guy in the front row with a Saloon T-shirt on. I guess it's like my friend, Johnny Nitro says: 'Why should I go on the road, when sooner or later the whole world comes to San Francisco?'"
Heralded by the San Jose Mercury News as the local musicians most likely to make their mark, ViV is an alternative rock band from San Francisco that relies on well-crafted songs performed with respect and integrity for the music. Their albums have been successful calling cards and their live shows continue to build their fan base at every show. To see ViV play live is a real "show" where they incorporate projected images, samples and backdrops that enable the band to convey a unique feeling for each song. This captivating Bay Area quintet has created a persuasive blend of music that is richly American heartland rock steeped in British pop.
The band's favorite local restaurant? "Hands down, no contest, Fondue Fred in Berkeley. Period. The chocolate fondue will make your knees buckle, friends. Do yourselves a favor and check it out. Thank us whenever you find the time." Zachary Ross & Desolation Angels
Chuck Prophet has managed to establish himself as a singular, maverick creative force since his days with Green On Red. Eclectic to the point of challenging the stylistic range/tolerance of some very hip scene-sters, he taps into all manner of popular music forms -- via his near-encyclopedic knowledge of same. Add that to a wry sense of humor and a keen eye for unusual characters. Chuck has created a growing body of work that continues to propel the music forward while hooking a proudly opposable thumb into a murky primordial swirl.
