The Song:
Mason Jar Dreams is a song I wrote in 2006 after an autumn trip up to Mendocino County. The "Wild West" atmosphere up North, with regard to marijuana growers, it's shaky legality, and the federal vs. local law enforcement issues surrounding marijuana production inspired me to write "Mason Jar Dreams". I have found the culture in this part of the country to be quite fascinating, especially at this particular juncture in US history. I wanted to record it with an atmosphere that suggested the prohibition era, with a "bootlegging, porch stomper kind of a vibe to it". Fortunately, my producer Dave Tweedie understood implicitly and aided me in putting this track together.
How I Came to Be Here:
I moved out to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2003 after having grown up moving around quite a bit. I initially had intentions to drive up North through Portland, Seattle, then up to Vancouver to choose a city to settle in and begin playing music. The Bay Area sucked me in though, and I never even took that trip. My life quickly became filled with activities like surfing at Bolinas, going to concerts at the Fillmore, performing all over town, and discovering a fantastic assortment of local musicians with whom I began recording my songs. I lived in Marin for some time, then ventured into the fog of the Outer Richmond, and more recently have found myself settled in the quaint lunacy of the Berkeley Hills. KFOG has been on the dial through all of these moves, and I feel pretty honored to have found a place for my music here.
Five places you might find me Loitering in the Bay Area:
*Taco Joe's, Mill Valley
~ Best grilled fish taco on the planet.
*The Fillmore, San Francisco
~ Just big enough to feel the energy of the crowd, small enough to feel close to the performer. Apples on the way in, posters on the way out...at least most of the time.
*North Point Reyes, Marin County
~ Drakes Beach, sunny day, 5 ft. south swell, light offshore winds.....heaven on earth...also maybe two days a year.
*Saul's Delicatessen, Berkeley
~ New York inspired Jewish Deli with a twist...Berklified with all organic meats, locally grown produce, and human sized sandwiches that don't make me feel like I'm participating in some insane eating contest.
*Ocean Beach
~ Running, surfing, sand dollar hunting, dog walking, dim sum afterwards....It's great here, if you're not impressed with the beach then go to the North End up to Sutro Park and check out the view from up there. Can't lose.
