04/22/2008 - EARTH DAY
Fogheads.... (sing) Happy Earth day to you, Happy Earth day to you – happy earth day every-body…regardless of kingdom, phyla, genus or species... And regardless of color of skin, fur, feathers, scales, leaves or bark… Happy Earthday to you. And this is Scoop Nisker, here to give you the dirty low down, the real nitty gritty. A giant scoop of planet earth.
And here we are on Earthday, 2008, living through this interglacial period, here in the Holocene, in the time of the rude awakening. And yes, Fogheads, the bio-hazards are now in the news room. You can smell them and feel them. With temperatures rising faster than expected, and endangered species increasing, salmon fishing canceled, hints of food shortages and a looming water crisis. So at this point the very word ecology can make you scream… “ekkkkk- ology!!!”
Our planet’s current condition is ironically captured in the plight of the Olympic athletes, who are worried about competing in Beijing, because they will have to breath the air.
What can you do, Fogheads? Well, maybe you could go out in the ocean, the primal amniotic fluid, and chain yourself to an endangered coral reef. Or go picket in front of the oil company of your choice. And remember, what will be required, is not just recycling and driving hybrid cars… but a major change in our way of living.
And i say we start by getting an upgrade of our mythology. Because for thousands of years we’ve been telling ourselves that we are just too groovy to be earthlings. So we must from some other realm. Those old stories regard the earth as some kind of training planet… where you come to learn some lessons or burn off some karma, or get saved by some messiah or another. And when you are done here on earth, then your real self, or soul will go off to your true home, and, you hope, live happily ever after.
But those beliefs are now dysfunctional, Fogheads. Those stories take the divine away from the earth, and rob our life here of its due reverence.
Meanwhile, there is no longer any doubt that the scientific story of evolution is true….at least among people who have a large forebrain. So now it’s time to accept that story as our new creation myth. Make ritual around it, dance it, and bring it into the marrow of our bones.
And speaking of bones, Fogheads, yours are made out of calcium, magnesium, sodium, phosphates-- the actual clay of earth molded into your shape. And the fluids in your body are similar to those of the oceans. You literally sweat and cry seawater. You are made of all natural ingredients, my friends. You are certified organic.
And we are built out of all the life that came before us. Scientists have discovered that we have three brains inside our skulls. A reptilian brain, a mammalian brain, and the neo-cortex, or new human brain. And the latest research indicates that we use our new human brain, mostly to make excuses for the behavior generated by our other 2 brains. Yes, Fogheads, the lizard and the wolf still live inside of us.
In fact, in this story of evolution, we find that we are related to every being that ever lived, related through the miracle molecule of DNA, which carries the information for every form of life on this planet. There is a tee-shirt out there that makes the point – it reads, “you share 25 percent of your DNA with bananas. Get over yourself.”
And Fogheads, if we start to see ourselves in the story of evolution, we will find hope. Because we see that nature is one tough mother, and that life on earth has so far survived comet collisions, ice ages, the plague, Attila the Hun, and even Henry Kissinger. So there is reason for optimism.
I also find hope by reminding myself that the word ecology has only been around for 40 years or so – that the first u. N. Conference on the environment only took place in 1970, which is a blink of an eye in biological time. We are just now waking up to our impact on the life of the planet, and just now learning how we have to change our story and our way of living. And we humans are so ingenious and such excellent tool makers, chances are good that we will find a way to heal the damage we have done.
So Fogheads, celebrate Earth day and take a vow to do more for your mother, the earth, the milky way’s little biosphere project, and everybody’s hood.
And when you hear the bad news, don’t let yourself slip into despair, and don’t tear your hair. Just take some deep breaths and remember that nothing can come together, until it has come apart.
(song) there’s a million things’ll kill ya
Verse #1
You say that lately you’ve been feeling kind of ill at ease.
You’ve been thinking about the West Nile virus and the lime’s disease.
You heard the ozone layer, is getting kind of thin,
And a black hole is comin’... It could suck us all in.
There’s a million things’ll kill ya, and you’re dyin’ of a broken heart!
Verse #2
They say there will soon be a world wide shortage of food.
And the people on the planet won’t be in a very good mood.
You know your government’s been captured in a nasty coup,
And now their war on terrorism’s terrorizing you.
There’s a million things’ll kill ya, and you’re dying of a broken heart.
chorus
There’s a million things’ll kill ya, and you’re dying of a broken heart.
Before you get it together, you know you’ve got to let it all come apart.
So just relax, and shout halleluiah.
Once you’re dead there’s nothin’ they can do to ya.
There’s a million things’ll kill ya and you’re dying of a broken heart.
bridge
Don’t eat that tuna. Don’t eat the salt.
Cholesterol is clogging up your veins.
The giant corporation are eating up your land,
And computers are eating up your brains.
You know the temperature’s risin’,
And the oceans are too,
And pretty soon the beach -- will be comin’ to you.
There’s a million things’ll kill ya, and your dying of a broken heart.
chorus
There’s a million things’ll kill ya and you’re dying of a broken heart.
But before you can get it together, you know you’ve got to let it come apart.
So just relax, stop singin’ the blues.
Just go out and make some of your own news.
There’s a million things’ll kill ya and you’re dyin’ of a broken heart.
You can do it Fogheads. Happy Earth Day to one and all…
