Week of February 13th: The Meth Problem, Part 3
Collecting interviews for this three parter, I've come to learn what a messed up drug meth is. For those trying to kick the drug, a link to Crystal Meth Anonymous listed under last week's Fogfiles. If you're a gay man with a meth problem in San Francisco, and you want to learn more about the PROP program in which you are essentially payed to stay off the drug, call 415-355-2000.
A response from a KFOG listener:
"I have listened to many reports that Peter has done in the past, but this one really hit home...I am single mom to 4 great kids, I have a great job with really good pay and am heading on the right track in life...
I 'discovered' crystal meth about 11 years ago and went on a 5 year binge which took a toll on my family and relations, with the help of my boyfriend, I quit cold turkey for 5 years...incredibly hard and painful, but I did it and thought that would be it...
Then last year I thought I could handle it again, and wound up seriously relapsing for a week...that put me in the hospital - my sugar level was dangerously high, and my muscles started to deteriorate at an alarming rate...
I am also diabetic, and deal with bipolar disorder...
I went thru a 12 week rehab program at Kaiser and it's a wonderful program - if you are willing to work at it...I discovered that I am not alone in having a mental health issue and being an addict in recovery...many people out there use a variety of substances to mask deeper issues from which they hide...
I went on vacation and wound up relapsing for a day...
I found myself appalled at my own behaviour and since then I have been clean with no desire to go back and use...I like to sleep, and to be able to get thru the day w/out the shakes, the mad thoughts that come with using, as well as the self-destructive thoughts that come and go and play havoc with feelings and emotions...
I'm in therapy now, and take a variety of meds for both physical and mental health reasons...it's a hard struggle to come and stay clean, but I am doing it - one day at a time, sometimes one moment at a time...
I found Peter's report so thought provoking that I had to write....I hope many who listened and are using, will get help, it is hard, but worth the peace of mind that comes with it...
this is an ugly drug and the god's honest truth is I wish I never
'discovered' it in the first place...
Thank you for listening..." |
Week of February 6th: The Meth Problem - Part 2
This week it's part two of our three parter on meth. If you don't know much about the drug, Wikipedia has a good, basic, but comprehensive description. For a real eye-opener, go to Google images and type in "meth before and after."
