Peter Finch's Fogfiles Archives - 2005

Check out Peter's Fogfiles from July - December of 2005. Just click on one to hear the audio.

Week of December 26th: Helping Friends with Cancer
I thought this piece with Lori Hope, author of "Help Me Live" would be a nice way to wrap up the Fogfiles for 2005. It first aired last Summer.

Week of December 19: Colored Bubbles!
For more information, go to: http://www.zubbles.com/mediaAndEvents/index.asp.

Week of December 12th: Hyder Akbar
This week we hear from Hyder Akbar, author of "Come Back to Afghanistan." When he was just 17, the Concord native reported from Afghanistan for NPR's, "This American Life."

note: This week's Fogfiles also contains a background nod to a colleague. The musical bed heard in the middle of the piece, between Steely Dan and U2 comes from "Riding the Wheel," the new CD from Ravi "RJ" Peruman, a local radio reporter.

Week of December 5th: Green Dorm Room
This week, we visit an environmentally friendly dorm room at UC Berkeley. To help create your own green living space, visit these sites: www.worldwatch.org and www.energystar.gov.

Week of November 28th: The Trouble With Tom
Author Paul Collins checks in with a quirky tale about the theft of the bones of founding father Thomas Paine. It's an epic tale of grave robbery and disobedient monkeys.

Week of November 21st: 24 Hours on Craigslist
The documentary about everybody's favorite community website returns to the Red Vic on Haight Street this week. For more on the film, go to: www.24hoursoncraigslist.com.

Week of November 14th: Lafayette Mom
This week we hear from a woman whose son was a classmate of accused murderer Scott Dyleski about what it's like to have people you know thrust into the national headlines.

Week of November 7th: Hooray for Bollywood!
For the full rundown on films being screened at the 3rd San Francisco International South Asian Film Festival, go to: www.thirdi.org/festival.

Week of October 31st: From Laserium to SonicVision
I can't do the visuals of SonicVision justice on the radio. You may want to check it out. It's pretty cool. For more info go to: www.chabotspace.org.

Week of October 24th: Palo Alto Downtown Streets Team
For more information on the program aimed at helping Palo Alto's homeless, check out "Downtown Streets Team" at www.paloaltodowntown.com.

Week of October 17th: Pole Dancing for Beginners
Exotic dancer Catherine Rose informs me I'm the first guy she's allowed into one of her exotic dancing classes. I can tell you, it was quite an honor. For more information on Catherine's classes, or to order a "Li'l Minx" brand portable stripper's pole, log on to www.learneroticdance.com.

Week of October 10th: Native American Swimmers
Six residents of the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota attempted to swim from Alcatraz island to San Francisco's Aquatic Park. Three made it all the way. They all did it without wetsuits! For more on the Pathstar program that brought them here, log on to www.pathstar.org.

Week of October 3rd: The National Anthem
A tip of the KFOG cap to these folks who had the guts to audition to sing the National Anthem at an upcoming 49ers game.

Week of September 26: The "C" Word
Lori Hope's book is called "Help Me Live: 20 Things People With Cancer Want You to Know." She's got a website, lorihope.com, and she's also involved in a local project featuring writers who've battled cancer. More on that at:cancerinsomanywords.com.

Week of September 19th: The Gatsby Picnic
Funny story. When Dave Morey and Irish Greg overheard the phone message saying I could cover the picnic, but would have to dress in period garb, Greg said he'd hit the "delete" button on the message right then. Dave said if it were him, he'd go dressed as a guy who'd been hit hard by The Depression. I, on the other hand, warmed to the idea and enjoyed putting on a vest and tie, and you know what...I had a great time. I want to attend next year with my wife and daughter. For more on the Art Deco Society of California, go to www.artdecosociety.org. For more on the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra, log on to www.rsjo.com.

Week of September 12th: Family Stories
Interested in capturing an elderly relative's account of your family history? Check out this link: www.personalhistorians.org.

Week of September 5th: Dial-A-Story
Looking for a good story? The San Francisco Public Library can set you up at (415) 437-4880.

Week of August 29th: Garrison-Martineau Project
I'm off this week. This is a repeat of a piece on a group that brings Christians and Atheists together. It first ran back in June. Here's the group's website: garrison-martineau.com.

Week of August 22nd: Refugee Transitions
For more than 20 years, low income refugees arriving in San Francisco have been helped by the group, Refugee Transitions. You can find the group on the web at reftrans.org.

Week of August 15th: Dashiell Hammett's Apartment
This week, we pay a visit to the San Francisco apartment Dashiell Hammett lived in while writing The Maltese Falcon and other classics in detective fiction.

Week of August 8th: The Sippy Cups
This piece actually first aired several months ago (note my head cold in feature). I thought I'd re-air it because I'm off this week, it fits nicely with local music month, and The Sippy Cups have an upcoming gig, Saturday, August 20th, 11 AM, and Noon at the Bay Area Discovery Museum.

Week of August 1st: Local Musicians
Musicians Chuck Prophet and Jonathan Richman tour the world, but call San Francisco home. Find out what it's like when these guys come home.

Week of July 25: Danville Police Department
Does it sound like Danville officer Nubia Zamora and I were having too much fun during my ride along? By the way, Officer Zamora and Police Chief Chris Wenzel are also technically Contra Costa County sheriff's deputies. Danville contracts out for its police service. I told Chief Wenzel that I'd mention the sheriff's department is hiring.

Week of July 18: Segways in San Francisco
This week, we step up onto one of those cool Segway scooters for a tour of San Francisco. Brian Huber, the owner of the San Francisco Electric Tour Company tells me about 15-20% of the people who take the tour are locals. You can find out more at: sfelectrictour.com.

Week of July 11th: Eleven
This week we introduce you to a San Francisco company that got its name, and even its philosophy, from a scene from the rock mocumentary, "This is Spinal Tap."

Week of July 4th: eBay Live 2005
We paid a visit to the big gathering of buyers and sellers in San Jose. Nice folks!
