1956 - Elvis Presley broke into the US charts for the first time with “Heartbreak Hotel.”

1965 - Written by Smokey Robinson, The Temptations scored a No. 1 hit with “My Girl.”

1967 - With help from Ron Wood and Aynsley Dunbar, The Jeff Beck Group made their stage debut at London’s Finsbury Park Astoria.

1973 - Elton John’s album Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only the Piano Player was the No. 1 album in the US. 

1978 - At the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Van Halen kicked off their first tour. Their concert rider famously specified that M&Ms be made available, but with all brown-colored candies removed.

1995 - R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry underwent successful brain surgery after suffering a brain aneurysm during a gig in Switzerland.
