1968 - James Taylor released an eponymous album in the U.K.
1968 - Elvis Presley received a letter from President Nixon, one of 66,000, that were sent out to potential administrative officers.
1969 - Four people died at the Altamont Free Concert in California. Headlined by the Rolling Stones and also featuring Santana, Jefferson Airplane and Crosby, Stills & Nash, With security provided by biker gang the Hell's Angels, one of the deaths was the result of a stabbing near the stage. The event was recounted a year later in "Gimme Shelter," a documentary on the Stones' 1969 tour.
1978 - While out on bail after being charged in the murder of girlfriend Nancy Spungen, Sid Vicious smashed glass into the face of Patti Smith's brother. The altercation occurred at New York's Hurrah rock club.
1988 - Metallica recorded their first video, for their hit song "One."
1993 - The Eagles got together to record a video for Travis Tritt's version of "Take It Easy." The project would lead to the band's reunion.
1995 - Joni Mitchell was honored with the Billboard's Century Award.
1997 - Metallica performed "Fuel" and "The Memory Remains" with special guest Marianne Faithfull on Saturday Night Live.
