New Privacy Warning Issued Over FaceApp

If you’ve been on social media recently, you’ve probably seen a lot your friends as older versions of themselves.

The app they’re using is called FaceApp and it uses artificial intelligence to morph facial features and swap genders. The app is Russian-owned and there is now speculation that the company is doing something shady with everyone’s pictures.

The photos are apparently being stored and used for facial recognition and public release if they choose.

The app states:

“You grant FaceApp a perpetual, irrevocable, nonexclusive, royalty-free, worldwide, fully-paid, transferable sub-licensable license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, publicly perform and display your User Content and any name, username or likeness provided in connection with your User Content in all media formats and channels now known or later developed, without compensation to you,” its terms read.”

The app has been around for a while, but has resurfaced from the #faceappchallenge and celebrities jumping on the trend.

Try it if you wish, but just a heads up in case you’re iffy about giving it a go.
