Uptown Oakland is for (music) lovers.
Bar Shiru will be the first of its kind in the Bay Area. It’s mission statement is to create a hi-fi bar that plays full records on analog, high-quality sound system that sets the tone for getting quiet and listening to music together. This will be done with acoustics and plenty of seating versus standing room.
Bar Shiru (1611 Telegraph Avenue) will serve a strong whiskey list, cocktails, beer, sake, and highballs, plus non-alcoholic drinks. Food will be simple small-plate options.
These kinds of bars are only beginning to pop up in the United States, originating in Japan. Like in Tokyo, Bar Shiru will focus on jazz but also soul, electronic, funk, and hip-hop.
Bar Shiru will open mid-February. “We feel like in our experiences, there aren’t a lot of places that are able to strike that balance — music is either sonic wallpaper, an afterthought, or inaudible due to crowd noise,” owner Daniel Gar tells Eater SF. Looks like he’s changing all that.
