More and more, we’re discovering new songs we like by hearing them in a movie or TV show (haven’t you ever held up your phone to the TV and asked Siri to name that song?). There’s even a name for the people who choose the songs that go into movies and TV series: Music Supervisors. How fun would it be to choose the perfect song from a limitless collection to highlight the climax of a story?

Lots of times these songs are by lesser-known artists (the easier to license the song), so it gives opportunities to a lot of up-and-coming musicians who get such paltry pay for their online streams. Sometimes the song was written for the movie (think “Streets of Philadelphia” by Bruce Springsteen, which you’ll hear this Sunday), but recently they are often nostalgic hits from the film’s period (think “Wouldn’t It Be Good” by Nik Kershaw, from Pretty in Pink) or just because they fit the theme (like “Friday I’m in Love” by the Cure, in 50 First Dates).
