Mornings on KFOG: Cal Professor Stuart Russell warns of the dangers of robotic weapons

The use of artificial intelligence in our everyday lives is more prevalent than ever. From personal assistant devices like the Amazon Echo, to automated cars, there is no denying that the use of artificial intelligence is ever encroaching into every corner of our society. But what does that mean when it comes to the future of weapons?

Recently, some of the leaders in technology and science, from Elon Musk to Stephen Hawking have begun to ring alarms about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence combining with robotics.

Cal computer science professor, and expert in artificial intelligence, Stuart Russell, presented a video made in collaboration with The Future of Life Institute called “Slaughterbots”, to the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons at the United Nations in Geneva last week showing the terrifying power of miniature AI-equipped drones that have the ability to decide who to kill on their own.

Professor Stuart ends the video stating: “This short film is just more than speculation. it shows the results of integrating and miniaturizing technologies that we already have”.

Listen in below for Alicia and Arthur’s interview with Professor Stuart, and find out whether or not he thinks this terrifying future can be avoided.
