Børns delivers dopamine-releasing performance of “10,000 Emerald Pools”

Breakout hit “Electric Love” from Børns’ 2015 debut album Dopamine put the spotlight on Michigan-born singer Garret Borns, even earning a nod from Prince himself. It wasn’t long after that Børns landed festival gigs like Coachella, finding himself on a Gucci runway, his hit playing in national commercials. He’s a natural creative, who thought originally about a career in film, with a fluid sense of style and a surprising falsetto.

Børns opens his KFOG Private Concert with Beach Boys-esque “Faded Heart,” a single sung nearly entirely at the top of his vocal range. “It’s a little early for those high notes,” he jokes. Børns moves on to the urgent “American Money (After Dark)” and glimmering “10,000 Emerald Pools.” His apparent talent is to stay in a place between glam-rock, pop, and somewhere orchestral that serves the listener at nearly every turn (“dopamine” is an appropriate album title). Mind you, he has yet to sleep since playing Rickshaw Stop the night before.

“What is the inspiration behind your fashion choices?” KFOG asks, referencing Børns’ earlier performance where he dressed in a gold-cuffed blazer without a shirt.

He laughs. “Ventilation.”
