The Edge talks U2’s bright new single “You’re The Best Thing About Me” and upcoming album

U2 released their shining single “You’re the Best Thing About Me” off their upcoming album Songs of Experience Wednesday. The joyful earworm looks at romance and distraction and questions why we sometimes walk away even from good things.

The Edge called in to Mornings on KFOG to chat with Alicia and Arthur about the upbeat track. Listen below for more, including the Edge’s thoughts on dieting, drinking, and humanitarian efforts we can all learn from.

Can you tell us a little about “You’re the Best Thing About Me” off Songs of Experience?

It’s a great example of defiant joy. It’s got that uplifting feeling. On the surface, it’s a love song – it’s Bono writing to his wife Ali. A lot of the album lyrics are, in fact, love letters to people that are significant in Bono’s life.

But there’s another side to it. It’s almost a cosmic question: why, when everything is perfect, do we have a tendency to mess it up?

(It goes) back to that Oscar Wilde thought of “each man kills the thing he loves.” It’s nuanced, it’s a complicated love song, but I think it’s also got that joyfulness and I think it’s a great tune.

When does the album come out?

It will be the end of this year. We can’t wait for people to hear it. It’s wall-to-wall songs. In this era of playlists and competing against the best work ever via the streaming services, this is, I think, an album that really stands up and I think people will actually listen to it from end to end. We really can’t wait for people to hear it.
