KFOG Guide to September in The Bay

September is here, but the end of summer doesn’t mean the end of fun! Here’s a look at some of this month’s must-do’s in the Bay Area.

Art

Your favorite Bay Area museums host free admission days every month, so go check out that exhibit you’ve had your eye on! Both The Museum of Craft and Design and Legion of Honor offer free admission to visitors on the first Tuesday of every month— this month, that falls on September 5th. The Bay Area Discovery Museum, GLBT History Museum, and the Berkeley Botanical Gardens all feature free admission the first Wednesday of every month too, so go visit one of those on September 6th!

In addition to individual museum’s free admission days, Bank of America is sponsoring a Free Museum Weekend on September 2nd and 3rd. Bank of America cardholders will have access to seven Bay Area museums and two Sacramento museums for free, including the de Young, Legion of Honor, and the Contemporary Jewish Museum. Check out the full list of participating museums here!

And yes, the Museum of Ice Cream is visiting San Francisco Septemeber 17 – October 30. Tickets are already sold out, but you can sign up to receive alerts about tickets we’re guessing and hoping will be added.

Food and Drink

As part of Pier 39’s 39th birthday celebration, Friday, September 1st is Free Clam Chowder Day! The first 39 people who present this coupon at Chowders will receive free clam chowder in a bread bowl. Yum!

Speaking of free food, Capital One 360 Cafe is featuring Free Belgian Waffle Wednesday on September 6th. The offer lasts from 9-11am (or while they last) so make sure to get to the Financial District as early as you can.

There are tons of upcoming food and drink festivals in the Bay Area: the Millbrae Art and Wine Festival on September 2nd, Mountain View’s Art and Wine Festival on September 9th, the Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival September 9th-10th, and Pier 39’s Fall Beer Pour on September 22nd. September in the Bay certainly won’t leave you hungry!

Music
Downtown Oakland will be hosting the 6th annual Hiero Day Hip Hop Music Festival and Block Party on Monday, September 4th. Check out the 40 artists and DJs appearing on three stages at this festival celebrating local Oakland talent, food, and art this Labor Day!

Lagunitas Brewery puts on a great (and free!) live concert series in Petaluma, and their two September shows are sure to fill up fast. Go check out Mavis Staples and Nick Waterhouse while enjoying some great craft beer and food

Film

Some of your favorite movies will return to the big screen in the Bay Area this month. Menlo Park’s Movie Under The Stars event will be featuring Doctor Strange on September 1st, and Mission Bay will be screening The Goonies at their Outdoor Summer Movie Night on September 2nd. Towards the end of the month, Dolores Park’s Film Night in the Park will show John Hughes’ classic The Breakfast Club on September 24th– but if you prefer horror movies, head over to Nob Hill for the Gallery Cafe’s monthly 16mm Movie Night, featuring vintage horror classics. Plus, Pier 39’s last Friday Outdoor Movie Night of the summer will feature The Pursuit of Happiness, so head down to the waterfront on September 29th!

Comedy

Looking for a good laugh? San Francisco is full of comedic talent if you know where to go! Stop by Milk Bar every first Monday of the month for milk” featuring San Francisco’s funniest comics showing off their best stand-up. Take advantage of the Labor Day holiday and head down there September 4th.

Want a lowkey spot to hear the best East Bay comedy? Look no further than “Chillarious,” where you can show up in your jammies, grab a glass of wine, and hear Berkeley’s best comedy— in a mattress shop, of all places!
