Are Amy Schumer’s demands a gender wage gap issue?

Amy Schumer is making waves this week, demanding more than $11 million dollars from Netflix for her standup The Leather Special. What’s interesting about this is Amy already released the special and got paid for it. So what she’s asking for is literally just gravy money. She earned $17 million in 2016 alone, landing a spot as the only woman on Forbes’ 2017 list of the world’s highest paid comedians. Still, Schumer renegotiated her Netflix special salary after learning Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle received between $50 million and $60 million for their standups.

Now the real question of the day is…..is this a gender wage gap issue? Let’s be real – it’s an issue when a woman is paid less than a man for the same job. Robin Wright making substantially less than Kevin Spacey for House of Cards is a gender wage gap issue, since they’re equals on the show.  Emmy Rossum making 1/5 of William H. Macy on Shameless when she’s the star of the show is DEFINITELY a gender wage gap issue.  But given that Chappelle and Rock are, hands down, two of the biggest comics of all time…the wage gap could be more attributed to her rookie status than being a female.

Chris Rock’s net worth is $70 million, and he hasn’t worked in 8 years! Chappelle turned down $50 million to do another season of Chappelle Show just because he wanted a break. Amy Schumer’s success is nowhere near that. She started doing standup in 2004 and landed on Last Comic Standing in 2007. So she’s been well known for 10 years.  In the world of comedy, she’s successful, but still a newbie.

Overall, I think she deserves more than $11 million for the special because I’m sure it’s doing well on Netflix. But she’s not on the Chappelle/Rock level of her career just yet.
