Chris Cornell’s daughter performs tribute to her father and Chester Bennington

Toni Cornell joined OneRepublic on Good Morning America on August 4th to perform a tribute to her late father, Chris Cornell, and the late Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington.

Cornell and OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder sang a moving version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” to a packed Central Park crowd as a part of GMA’s Summer Concert Series. Linkin Park was originally scheduled to perform on the morning show that day, but following Bennington’s death, OneRepublic detoured from their tour on Linkin Park’s behalf and performed a tribute show instead.

Toni, Chris Cornell’s 12-year-old daughter, said of the experience: “It’s an honor to perform this for my dad and Chester and to sing this for them.”

Bennington and Cornell had a long friendship throughout their respective careers, touring together and sharing the stage numerous times, especially throughout the 2000s. The two frontmen died within months of each other this summer, with Bennington passing on what would have been Cornell’s 53rd birthday.

Ryan Tedder expressed OneRepublic’s respect and admiration for Bennington and Linkin Park, telling ABC News that “it was an honor to pay tribute to their beloved colleagues.”

“Chester sang this at Chris’ funeral,” Tedder said, attesting to the pair’s close friendship. “It’s a very special song to us, and especially to Toni as well.”

The Cornell family showed their support for Toni on social media, with 17-year-old Lily writing an Instagram comment saying that she’s “so insanely proud” of her younger sister.

Both Vicky Cornell and Talinda Bennington tweeted about the performance, in addition to tweeting each other. The posts clearly expressed just how much the two late musicians loved Toni and how close the two families are.
