“13 Reasons Why” filming in downtown Martinez

13 Reasons Why, the controversial Netflix series, is utilizing parts of downtown Martinez as filming locations for its second season.

The shoot is scheduled to last from 7am until 8pm on Wednesday at 625 Court Street and 816 Main Street. This shoot is the second of nine that are currently plotted out by the production team throughout the remainder of 2017.

13 Reasons Why was originally a book written by Jay Asher, published in 2007, and had been in talks to adapt it into a film or television series ever since. The plot focuses around a high school girl named Hannah who commits suicide and leaves behind tapes explaining who and what drove her to that decision. After the show’s release, viewers quickly began praising the show for its uncensored perspective on a topic as serious as suicide, but others are upset that it has seemed to oversimplify such a complex issue.

There are many differences between the book and the television series, and certain aspects seem to have been added into the show for dramatization purposes.

Many protesters of the show claim that it “glamorized suicide,” and it has even been accused of inspiring copycat incidents.

Their story isn't over. Season 2 of #13ReasonsWhy is coming.

The announcement of a second season was met with divisive reactions, but author Jay Asher is excited about the continuation of the series, saying that he’s “curious as well” about the loose ends that were left at the end of the series and of his own book.

“I’d thought of a sequel at some point. I’d brainstormed it, but decided I wasn’t going to write it. So I’d love to see it.”

The cast also expressed their excitement at the announcement of a second season; Dylan Minnette, who plays the show’s main protagonist Clay, told Entertainment Weekly, “I honestly did not realize how much was going to be left open at the end.”

In June, the production held a casting call in Vallejo for extras to play high school students and local residents, citing filming locations such as San Rafael, Vallejo, and Sebastopol. The first season was also filmed mainly in these three cities.

The second season is set to hit Netflix in 2018, so catch up on the first season and read the book to get ready!
