SFMOMA will text you art based on your mood

Skip the lines: there’s a new way to connect with the SFMOMA’s extensive art collection, and it’s on-demand.

San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) rolled out a new texting service that gives you a tiny peek into the museum’s massive collection. Send the keywords ‘send me’ followed by a word or emoji to 572-51 and the museum’s API will respond with a corresponding image.

Sending a red pepper emoji gave me a 1915 image of a bowl of peppers from their collection.

You can also ask for a mood or a specific hue with a phrase like “send me something purple.”

When you text the same thing twice, they won’t actually send the same piece of art twice, making this texting service even more dynamic and allowing art lovers a more in-depth look into their endless collection that many may not ever view in its entirety.

5% of SFMOMA’s approximate 35,000 works are viewable at any given time. The texting service was specifically devised as a way to increase accessibility to works many may not have seen yet.

Have fun!
