The xx’s Sincere Performance at Bill Graham

The xx trio (Romy, Oliver, and Jamie) just wrapped up three sold out nights April 15-17 at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. On tour with them is British electronic R&B singer Sampha, who released his debut album Process this year, with breakouts “Blood On Me” and “(No One Knows Me) Like The Piano.” After his soulful thirty minute set on Saturday, the anticipation was high for the indie rockers to step on stage. At last, the lights dimmed, fog filled the stage, the prop wall revolved, and The xx started off the night with their latest single “Say Something Loving” off their third album I See You.

“It’s an honor and pleasure being back in San Francisco because we love the city,” the band shared in between songs during the hour and a half long set. Frontman and bassist Oliver Sim told the crowd he was enjoying seeing their faces up close, coming off a packed Coachella show on Friday. He even shared his plans to see a Giants game on Easter before their second gig that night.

Despite their back-to-back schedule, The xx gave an intimate and energetic performance. Romy, Oliver, and Jamie each took turns at solos. Guitarist Romy Madley Croft sang angelically over “VCR” from their debut album xx, “Angels” off their sophomore album Coexist, and the sentimental track “Performance” off their latest album. Another crowd favorite was Oliver’s seductive voice in “Fiction,” which had him swaying with the bass to audience cheers.

Oliver and Romy’s strong chemistry defines their stage presence. The two are completely in-sync when they jam out under the fluorescent lights, each member complementing the other. They concluded the show with more displays of sincerity, thanking everyone who came, confessing they truly love their supportive fans, and promising to be back soon. DJ Jamie Smith sets the mood for their encore song “On Hold,” leaving the crowd singing and dancing until the very end.
