Spoon Drops Music Video for ‘Can I Sit Next To You’

Spoon has been on fire with with their ninth studio album Hot Thoughts and now a groovy second single “Can I Sit Next To You.” The upward arcing track resolves itself in staccato rhythm with a tiny break around 1:30. Spoon isn’t known for dance tracks, but this one is reminiscent of Red Hot Chili Peppers funk.

Apparently, that’s not the only way “Can I Sit Next To You” might sound familiar. According to a press release:

If the new Spoon single ‘Can I Sit Next To You’ feels eerily familiar, like something that’s been playing in the background of your life for the last few months, there’s actually a good chance it has: For the last few months, a campaign of subliminal placements of ‘Can I Sit Next To You’ has seen the unreleased, unidentifiable track being played at various clubs and venues, as American Airlines boarding music, even by the house bands of the ‘Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ and ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live.’

Hot Thoughts is Spoon’s first album in three years, following They Want My Soul in 2014. Spoon announced via Twitter they’ll be playing the Greek Theatre with fellow minimalist rock band The Shins and appearing on Ellen next week.

Spoon recently performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Late Late Show with James Corden to promote Hot Thoughts. They’re also teaming up with Aura Reader” and Spotify to allow fans to generate custom artwork and playlist ratings (based on“danceability,” “liveness,” “energy” and more).

Spoon announced tour dates for North America and Europe and will play the Greek Theatre in Berkeley September 30.
